Rock Start Birthday Party

Let's face it - who DOESN'T want to be a rock star?  Kids absolutely love to act like their favorite stars and the "rock star birthday" is one of our most popular birthday party themes.

Invitations

There are a lot of options for Rock Star Party invitations.  With printable CD labels and CD covers, you can personalize a CD with your child’s favorite music, and also print a cover for the CD case with your child’s picture and the party details.

Another option is to send out a “Grammy style” invitation to an awards show with your child listed as the Emcee.   This could be printed on regular card stock, but don’t forget to seal with a sticker or Velcro so the cards can be ripped open just like they do on the awards shows!!

Printed tickets to a Rock Concert featuring your child as the artist would be another fun invitation.

If you wanted to go for more of an American Idol theme, send out a flyer printed on a yellow sheet of paper like the contestants receive on the show that says, “You’re going to Hollywood!!” and list the party details below.

Setting up the stage

Decorations, Favors, Goodie Bags

First, we like to roll out the red carpet for our guests to arrive.  Red carpets can be purchased at most party supply stores, or at www.shindigz.com.   Tie two bunches, each with 5-7 balloons on both sides of the entry.

To get your guests in the spirit of your Rock Star Party, offer an assortment of Temporary Tattoos, Pop Rocks, and name tags on the welcome table as your guests enter the party.

Customized guitar picks with the birthday child’s name and theme are a cute way to confetti the tables, and they also make fun favors.  These can be ordered at www.steveclaytonguitars.com

Room Setup

The room set-up for a Rock Star party should include a stage that is sectioned off with balloons, posters, streamers etc.  Holiday lights can also be used to mark off the stage.  You can purchase backdrops www.shindigz.com

Karaoke can be loads of fun at a Rock Star party.  Whether you hire a DJ service, or plan to use your own karaoke machine, the younger and/or shyer children have an easier time singing to the original soundtracks along with the artists rather than singing true karaoke where their voices are the only ones heard.

Whether or not your party is American Idol style, it’s always fun to have a judges’ table.  Make sure the judges are always complimentary of the children’s performances, and only insulting to adults!!

Judging the Rock Contest

If you are planning karaoke, it will provide plenty of entertainment and lasting memories for your party.  Another idea is to play “Name that Tune”.  Separate the children into two or more teams.  Play a few notes from age appropriate music and see which team can guess the most songs correctly.  This game works better if you pre-record the music that you want to play and have it ready to move right along into the next song.

Birthday Cake Ideas

The birthday cake can be very special at your Rock Star party.  You could order or make a microphone shaped cake, guitar pick shaped cake, a picture of your child dressed up as a Rock Star can be scanned and printed on a sheet cake (Wal-Mart bakery offers this service), you could make your own sheet cake and use decorator icing to print on it like a ticket stub.  If you want to wow your guests, order a six-string guitar cake from your local baker.

Another benefit to hosting a Rock Star party, is when you’re ready to end the party, it’s perfectly acceptable to flip on all the lights and announce “Last Call!!”

Party Favors and Thank You's

After the party is over and you have recovered from the clean-up, it’s time to start on the thank you cards.  We like to substitute Rock Star posters for the thank you cards.  The birthday child can “autograph” the bottom of the poster with a quick thanks for the gift.  These can be printed at FedEx/Kinkos, or any print shop.  Smaller versions can be printed at home on photo paper.    You could also print a poster with all of the party guests on stage together, so the guests receiving the poster will have a piece of memorabilia from the event that includes their picture.  Another idea is to print “Rolling Stone” magazines with the birthday child on the cover.  These can be printed at the print shop, or on your home color printer with 8 ½ x 11glossy printer paper.  You can include several pictures inside, complete with captions and “articles” about the party.  This takes a little more time, but it’s such a fun way to close out your Rock Star party.
